so speaker boehner once again decided to forego the hastert rule. that's how they got the sandy emergency aid bill passed. look again at the votes. republican "yes" votes for the disaster bill: 49. republican "no" votes for that bill: 179. that bill was dead on arrival under the hastert rule. the republican caucus couldn't support it, wouldn't support it, and we would be without any help now if they followed the hastert rule. on the democratic side, what was the vote on the hurricane sandy bill? 192 yes votes to 1 no vote. the final count, 241 ayes, 180 nays, the bill passed, but about three quarters of the support came from democratic votes. if the speaker had imposed the hastert rule, not only would we be off the fiscal cliff, but we'd have failed at providing disaster relief for hurricane sandy. the only reason that these critical pieces of legislation avoided the fate of the highway bill, of the farm bill, is that the speaker didn't follow the hastert rule. he couldn't follow the hastert rule because he wouldn't have been able to pass legislatio

we're just getting news from eric cantor's office, majority leader, and as well as speaker boehner, they have a plan when it comes to the debt ceiling. they will pass a debt ceiling, the gop will pass a debt ceiling extension for the next several months, in exchange for something to happen in the senate. what they want to have happen in the senate is the senate to pass a budget. as you might know as well, the senate has not passed a budget in several years time. so that is what that, this is negotiating point. the house says they will go ahead and do this. they will extend our debt limit, our credit limit, if you will in exchange for seeing a budget passed in the senate. now it is worth noting as you might know, charles krauthamer comes out with an editorial every week in the "washington post" and he actually wrote about this idea today in his editorial saying almost exactly the same thing. i'm going to read this part to you. the more prudent course, he is talking about the debt ceiling debate, would be to find an offer that can not be refused of the short-term tradeoff utterly unasailab
